The Department of History of Pub Kamrup College was established with the establishment of the College on 21th August 1972 with the objective to encourage historical study with scientific outlook for removal of the backwardness, superstition etc from society. The department was started with the introduction of two-year Pre-University Course in History. Degree Programme of Gauhati University was introduced in the year 1975. The Major/Honours Course in History was introduced from the academic session 1993-1994.
The long-term mission is to make the department a centre of excellence in entire Assam. Students are encouraged to take higher degree in various educational Institutions and encouraged them for their placement.

• To encourage the student to go for research activities relevant to the society.
• To make the department as advance one with well-equipped books and other infrastructures.
• To established community relations.
In the year 1992 the Historical Society of Pub Kamrup College was established with the objectives to Repopularise and extend historical studies. A Departmental Library was established in the year 1992 and it was formally inaugurated on 27th February 1993. A seminar on Communalism in India and Assam was organized on 27th Feb,1993 in the wake of increasing communal vision after the demolition of Babri Masjid in December 1992, which influenced the whole nation.
