BIO-PHYSICS DEPARTMENT

Profile

Departmental Profile

There are very few Indian universities which have brought Biophysics to the society as a subject for academic degree and research is being offered.. We believe that setting up such a department will bridge up North-Eastern region to the other part of our country and the world as well. Keeping this in view initially department of Biophysics proposes to introduce a Post-Graduate course highlighting various applications of physical sciences to Biology.. Biophysics department, Pub Kamrup College, is the first of its kind in the entire North Eastern Region of our country with a motive to nurture the young minds by the sensation of Biophysics and to train them up and to carry out scientific investigation about biological systems with the help of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The department is a brainchild of the Advanced Level Institutional Biotech Hub of the College.
The proposed programme is referred as M.Sc. and Integrated M.Sc. Biophysics henceforth. At the very beginning the conceptual idea for erecting a professional subject Biophysics in Pub Kamrup College was first conceived by Dr. B. K. Dev Choudhary in the year 2016. Owing to his continuous effort and pertaining through the vernacular norms of the university the department existed into limelight in 2017.
Initially College has started a PG programme (M.Sc.) in Biophysics with due permission and affiliation by Gauahti University (GU) from the academic session 2017 – 2018.
Opening again to offer 5 (3+ 2) years Integrated M.Sc. Biophysics Programme with due permission and affiliation under Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU) in the year of 2020-2021.
Dr. B. K. Dev Choudhary, Ex Principal, Pub Kamrup College, Department of Physics, has valuable contribution in the setting up of the Biophysics Department at Pub Kamrup College, Baihata Chariali, Kamrup, the College would like to thank the following several academic eminent personalities of the country like Prof. Mohan Chandra Kalita, Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University, Assam, Prof. M. R. N. Murthy, Molecular Biophysics Unit. Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, Prof. Abhijit Chakravarty, Biophysics and Crystallographic Division, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata, Dr. N. C. Talukdar, Director, IASST, Guwahati, Prof. Prabodh Borah, Department of Animal Biotechnology, College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara, Dr. Jiban Jyoti Sarma, Associate Professor, Guwahati Medical College, Guwahati, and Dr. P. V. B. Reddy, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Science and Bioinformatics, Assam University, desire the study of Biophysics in the North-East India and have consented to cooperate in every aspect in the upliftment of the department.
The Dept. of Biophysics is in a full-fledged science building floor with state of the art infrastructure facilities. Although the department is an academically full-fledged PG department; but financially in terms of teaching and non-teaching staffs and laboratory facilities, it is mostly dependent on the DBT, Govt. of India sponsored Advanced Level Institutional Biotech Hub of the College. The department is very much fortunate to claim the full credit of Biotech Hub for the optimal use of laboratory facilities for setting and running the laboratory facilities for M.Sc.and Integrated M.Sc. in Biophysics. It is also encouraging that the help of the Guwahati Biotech Park, IASST, IITG is assured for the sophisticated instrumentation facilities by the concerned authorities to run the course effectively.
It is our pride to inform you that the Gauahti University has recognized the laboratory as the M. Sc. (Biophysics) practical examination centre after proper inspection in the very first year of its beginning.
The department stands for integration of basic research with industrial and medical application. The areas covered under these courses are: Molecular and cellular Biophysics, Radiation and Medical Biophysics, Biophysical Techniques, Bioenergetic, Bioinformatics and Molecular Modelling, Biomolecular Spectroscopy and Crystallography, Neuroscience and Nano biophysics etc. One of the important features of the M.Sc. programme is that major emphasis is given to the hands on practical training of the students. Adjunct faculties, Scientist and experts from other research institutions and university departments participate in the teaching programme. Along with this teaching programme. Along with this teaching programme, the outstanding scientists, professors from other Institutes and University deliver seminars on specialised area of Biophysics.
Till now fourth batch students of the department of Biophysics successfully completed the MSc. 4th semester final examinations.

M.Sc. in Biophysics
Initially College has started a PG programme in Biophysics with due permission and affiliation by Gauahti University from the academic session 2017 – 2018.
The education system in India has seen a lot of transformation over the decades. The introduction of integrated programmes in higher education is one of them. The integrated course is a degree programme that merges two degrees and a single degree is awarded as a whole after the completion of course. Presently, there are various colleges/institutes/Universities in india that offer integrated courses.

Integrated M.Sc. in Biophysics
Pub Kamrup College has also become pioneer in the area of Biophysics in North East India by opening again 5 (3+ 2) years Integrated M.Sc. Biophysics Programme with due permission and affiliation under Assam Science and Technology University in the year of 2020-2021 to offer program in Integrated M.Sc. Biophysics with the aim of inculcating research at the early stage.
Accordingly the syllabus of the course is designed to create a basic scientific awareness among all the interdisciplinary subjects. The Integrated M.Sc in Biophysics program will have courses that cover both fundamental and advanced topics in Biophysics. The course offers theoretical and experimental courses and skill development to the students through seminar presentation, opportunity to take a class to the lower semester students having soft skill development. Project work in the final semester makes the course an attractive to the students in pursuit of higher dimension of science.
Programme Eligibility
The students for Integrated M.Sc. programme are admitted based on merit of higher secondary passed with Chemistry/Physics/Biology/Mathematics etc.
The students for M.Sc. programme are admitted based on merit of B.Sc.with Biophysics/Chemistry/Physics/Botany/Zoology/ Microbiology/Biochemistry/Life Sciences etc.

PROGRAMMES ELIGIBILITY FOR
