A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Botany is the branch of Biology that specially focuses on plants which are correspondingly the reservoir of noval natural products. Many of the natural products that they produce are useful to humans. Besides foodstuff, plants are the resources for other human requirement like medicines, papers, furniture, fibers, etc. Therefore, the study of plants is very significant for sustainable life. The visionaries of the college were aware with the importance of this subject in the higher educational institutions. Thus, the Department of Botany has come into the existence in Pub Kamrup College.
The Department started in the year 1986 with HS Section. General UG course started in the year 1989. In the year 1999, the Department started the Major course in Botany. Mrs Kusum Hazarika was the founder HoD of the Department. She retired from the department in the year 2009. Presently Mr Puspendra Kr Sarma is serving as HoD of the department. Other two Associate Professors of the department are: Mr Hirendra Sahariah and Dr Paresh Ch Kalita and one Assistant Professor is Dr Dipak Konwar. The faculty members of the Department are experts in various fields of Botany, viz. Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding, Plant Taxonomy and Systematics, Plant Physiology and Microbiology, respectively.
